Reliable rice with less attention

Rice Cookers: size around your normal batch, not the biggest dinner of the year.

Compare true uncooked capacity, minimum batch, keep-warm quality and pot care for the rice and grains you make most.

Three checks that decide the right rice cooker.

Work out the uncooked cups you cook on a normal night, decide whether mixed grains justify fuzzy-logic control, then check how the pot and inner lid come apart for washing. The most common trap: a large cooker that performs poorly with one- or two-cup batches.

1

Uncooked capacity

Labels mix uncooked cups, cooked cups and servings. Compare the uncooked figure from the manual and plan around your normal batch.

2

Keep-warm quality

Good holding keeps rice moist when dinner slips; poor holding dries the edges and changes texture.

3

Inner pot and lid

A removable inner lid, accessible steam vent and an available replacement pot keep the cooker pleasant to use for years.

Rice Cookers guides

Start with the question closest to yours.

Each guide opens with a verdict, three picks with a reason to skip each, then the rest of the field.

The fundamentals

What every rice cookers guide assumes you know.

Read this once and the individual guides get shorter and clearer. Dimensions, included parts and care instructions change by model revision, so confirm the current manual before ordering.

Uncooked cups is the only honest size

One rice-cooker cup of uncooked rice produces several cooked portions, so a three-cup cooker already covers a small household with leftovers. Cooked-cup and serving claims make two similar cookers look very different. Use the included cup, because rice-cooker cups are smaller than a US measuring cup.

Control style changes the experience

One-switch cookers are fast to understand and cheap. Micom or fuzzy-logic models adjust heat and timing as water ratio or grain type varies, which pays off when you rotate between white rice, brown rice, mixed grains and porridge. If the same white-rice batch appears every evening, the simpler cooker is the better buy.

Pot, lid and keep-warm decide daily friction

Check whether the inner lid detaches, where condensation collects and whether replacement pots are still sold. Coated pots need soft utensils and hand washing. A cooker that dries rice during a long keep-warm is not a good fit for households with moving dinner times.
